Catching up (Part One)

I have fallen so behind in posting, I’m so sorry everyone! It’s been crazy, but fun, so here’s a summary of what I’ve been up to and a small sample of the amazing things that are happening in Division H.

FirstPlaceTopicsOn the 19th of October we had the Divsion H Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests. We sent two worthy representatives to the District contest, held on the 8th-10th of November in Colchester. David Henderson made it to the final of the Table Topics Contest and gave a fun and entertaining response to the question ‘If you could go back in time, what would you tell your 10-year-old self?’ It was his first time competing at that level and he really did us all proud. Well done, David, you’re officially a District Finalist!

Chris Boden was also brilliant at the Humorous Speech final. He’d made a few tweeks to the speech he delivered at Division, including enlarging his ‘certificates’ which I thought was very effective. He didn’t work on his singing or dancing, which was vital, and was rewarded with a respectable third place. Well done to you too, Chris!FirstPlaceHum

I visited Tunbridge Wells Speakers on the 22nd of October, and what an amazing, supportive group they are! It took me a while to get there but it was absolutely worth the drive. I stayed for their committee meeting afterwards and shared with them the tips for promoting the club and retaining members that I have picked up from all the wonderful things our clubs are doing. I can’t emphasise enough how important it is for vibrant, successful clubs to visit each other and share what they’re doing. I do what I can with my visits and this blog, but a lot more can be accomplished if you’re out there yourselves.

Tunbridge WellsI had the pleasure of speaking at an event at Fluor Farnborough, where our very own Fluor Farnborough Speakers is located. I spoke about strategies for managing your nerves and techniques for delivering a great presentation then took questions. I remember thinking how impossible it would have been for me to do that without all that I have learned and all the wonderful support I have received from my Toastmasters experience. It was very rewarding to share this experience with a whole new audience, and subsequent meetings at Fluor have seen an increase in visitors.
