A few weeks ago Woking Speakers held a special evening to launch them at their new venue. They invited the Mayor of Woking Borough Council to attend, which she did and it was a great success at the time. However, the success has spread beyond that meeting. The Mayor was so impressed she wants to come back to the club and she is encouraging council members to attend as well so they can improve their public speaking skills.
In addition, club president Doug New has been asked to be the Borough’s new Wreath Announcer, a very important annual role which requires him to help arrange and announce the wreath-laying ceremony on Remembrance Sunday. This is the Mayor’s highest priority engagement, so it’s quite an honour to be involved in such a prominent way. Doug will be serving as understudy to the current announcer this year and he will take over from next year.
The Mayor and staff had never heard of a public speaking club in the town and this simple invitation has the potential to grow the club immensely. If your club is looking for ways to increase membership, why not invite the Mayor along to a meeting, you never know what might happen.
