Woking Speakers Club held a double celebration this week. Not only was the Mayor of Woking in attendance to celebrate Woking’s move to its beautiful new venue, but their VPE, Sam Babbister, brought along the newest addition to the Toastmasters family, little Tabitha, only 11 days old! She’s very adorable and I’ve no doubt mum will have her up on stage in no time. Congratulations, Sam, on your lovely daughter’s safe arrival.
Woking Speakers hosted the Mayor, Cllr Anne Roberts, as they officially opened Woking United Reformed Church as their new location. The church completed a new build in the last few years and it’s wonderful for Woking Speakers to be able to make use of the new facilities. The venue is much closer to the train station and the pub (obviously) and disabled access is excellent.
The meeting was really spectacular. We were treated to speeches about food, how lucky we are to be alive, Scottish currency and an optimistic accountant (yes, there is such a thing in these austere times!). The warmup got us thinking about our favourite gadgets, the topics asked us to consider the problem of debt and the topics contest was won by the Mayor, who gave us a great speech about the importance of managing our personal finances. Cllr Roberts said she frequently had to hand out certificates at functions she attends but this was the first time she was awarded one and she was thrilled!
I’ve no doubt Woking Speakers will go from strength to strength in this new venue. It really is a fun and vibrant club with a wide variety of members from many countries around the world. I encourage you to visit some time!
